Reslife conference focuses on LGBTQIA+

03 June 2024      Bethany Hancock, CUBO Communications Officer

The 2024 CUBO Residence Life Conference took place from 15 to 17 May at the University of Nottingham.

2024 marks the sixth year of the conference, and for the first time it encompassed a specific theme - Embracing Diversity: Supporting LGBTQIA+ Students.

The Residence Life Conference is aimed at professionals working in residence life at universities and colleges, from directors to resident assistants, and is a valuable opportunity to learn, network, and share best practice in the sector.

In 2024, the programme spanned two days, with a curated roster of speakers and workshops to inspire delegates in their efforts to support LGBTQIA+ students on their campuses. Speakers included those with lived experience, leaders in diversity projects and experts at the forefront of creating change for diverse communities.

The conference attracted 125 delegates to the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham and included the CUBO Residence Life Star Awards on the evening of 16 May.

Conference Host James Greenwood said “As Chair of the CUBO Residence Life Group, I am immensely proud of what we have achieved. We chose this theme because creating a safer and more inclusive student experience on our campuses is not just important, it’s essential. LGBTQIA+ students face unique challenges, and in residence life we are well placed to support them through these and ensure they feel valued and safe to be who they are at university.”

“We heard from a number of truly inspiring speakers, and the thoughtful discussions that came out of the workshops demonstrate the level of talent, commitment and compassion we have in the sector. The energy and openness shown by everyone in attendance has made this conference an outstanding success. I cannot wait to see the learning put into practice on campuses across the country, and what positive impact this has for students.”
